Question: Have you ever wondered why the majority of skills-based training and motivational programs produce limited or temporary changes – and why, after the initial pump and excitement, you’re back to business as usual?

The answer is that even well-trained, motivated and committed individuals often sabotage themselves because their subconscious minds harbor beliefs that are contrary to success.

If you have attended a few “positive thinking” or “motivational” training sessions you probably realize that positive thinking and motivation alone seldom create lasting changes. To make real improvements and then sustain them over time, you must access and transform the underlying beliefs and attitudes that sabotage peak performance.

According to the latest scientific understanding of the mind, most neuroscientists agree that at least 95% of thought, emotion, and learning occurs at the subconscious level of the mind – that is, without our conscious awareness. That means that at least 95% of our “choices” and resulting behaviors aren’t conscious! They are pre-programmed responses from past experiences that are often outdated and self-sabotaging. To put it more bluntly, conscious decisions and actions are mostly an illusion. What passes for reasoned judgement and creative thinking is statistically speaking much more reactive than proactive. Even the best training programs often fail in the implementation stage because individuals have self-sabotaging subconscious beliefs and perceptions that prevent them from behaving in ways that support the training they have received. By aligning subconscious beliefs and perceptions with your conscious goals and objectives, success becomes more a self-fulfilling prophecy than a day-to-day struggle.

This important fact is now being recognized by forward thinking business visionaries. By understanding the effect of the subconscious mind on performance, you can learn to update your decision making skills by reprogramming the subconscious mind for success, using current wisdom and knowledge instead of habitual and limited thinking from the past.

The Power of Beliefs

“Consider any great organization that has lasted over the years, and I think you will find that it owed its resilience not to its form of organization or administrative skill but to the power of what we call beliefs and the appeal those beliefs provide. This, then is my thesis: I firmly believe that any organization in order to survive and achieve success, must have a sound set of beliefs on which it premises all its policies and actions. Next, I believe that the most important single factor in corporate success is faithful adherence to those beliefs. And finally, I believe that if an organization is to meet the challenges of a changing world, it must be prepared to change everything about itself except those beliefs as it moves through corporate life.” Thomas Watson Jr.– son of the founder of IBM, The Denver Post…July 22, 2001
